Sometimes, when you’re focusing on home improvement, it means that you’re trying to add something to your home or make something better by increasing the quality of an area. Other times, home improvement is going to be about fixing what’s already there. And when it comes to the roof on your house, maybe your best idea for development is going to be ensuring that the leaks and squeaks are eliminated as soon as possible.
You can make sure the gutters are clean, you can check for water damage, you can plug up any holes that animals may have gotten to, and you can potentially put new roofing shingles on. These are all activities that are considered home-improvement even though technically they may fall under the category of home repair.
Cleaning the Gutters
Especially if you have any trees near your home, your gutters can get clogged and nasty very quickly. And then from there, you may even end up with birds nesting in them. By cleaning your gutters at least seasonally, you’re making sure that no permanent damage or rust comes with dirt, leaves, or other things that can get caught in the gutter system. If you’ve ever had any moss or mold that ends up in there, you know how ugly it can get.
Checking for Water Damage
If you check for water damage in your attic area, you can find out if there are any home improvements that you need to make on your roof as well. Even if there is a small hole or leak, if water gets in, it can trail down through your walls, into insulation, and in all sorts of places that you don’t check very regularly. And once things in your walls get wet, it can have a hard time drying out, causing severe damage in the long run.
Plugging Up Animal Holes
Strictly regarding squeaks, have you ever had a squirrel, raccoon, or other animal decide that they want to live inside any of your roofing structure? Once they get in there, it can be incredibly difficult to get them out, and many of them will even create nests so that they can have babies in there.
Putting New Roofing Shingles On
There are a few different reasons that you might want to put new roofing shingles on your home. If your old ones are getting worn or weathered, they may not be keeping heat in or water out very well. Also, if you want to pick a new color of paint on the outside of your house, getting shingles that are a new and updated color might also be a home of the project that you decide to do.
